As usual in his cityscapes of The Hague, Floris Arntzenius (1864-1925) painted the Spuistraat in grey, cloudy weather. It must have just rained, because the asphalt is shiny and reflects the cloudy sky. A strong wind blows through the street and stirs up the clothes of the chic passers-by. In an interview from 1910, Arntzenius explains why he liked to paint these kinds of streets: \u201cA facade like that, you see, that is a wonderful thing. All those signs and flagpoles, all that whimsical. And then just a little color here and there. Some red. Sometimes yellow. Just a tip.”<\/p>\n

In 1892 vertrok Arntzenius uit Amsterdam om zich in Den Haag te vestigen. Hier lukte het om enige bekendheid te krijgen. Hij werd lid van Pulchri Studio en oefende daar later prominente bestuursfuncties uit. Het overgrote deel van zijn oeuvre bestaat uit stadsgezichten, maar in 1910 keerde hij zich van dit genre af. Naar eigen zeggen wilde hij eens portretten en bloemstillevens schilderen, omdat hij \u2018wars van alle hoovaardij [hoogmoed] om koopende bewonderaars\u2019 was. Zeven jaar later pakte Arntzenius het schilderen van stadsgezichten weer op. Hij ging zich vooral richten op Den Haag en met name op het centrum. De Spuistraat behoort samen met het Noordeinde tot de Haagse plekken die Arntzenius het meest heeft getekend en geschilderd. In de collectie van het Haags Historisch Museum bevindt zich ook de kleinste Spuistraat die hij ooit heeft vervaardigd: een schilderijtje van 8,3 cm hoog en 5,8 cm breed, bedoeld voor het grote poppenhuis van Lita de Ranitz.<\/p>\n
